Types of Elections in India
1. General Elections (Lok Sabha)
Held every 5 years to elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Lok Sabha. The party or coalition with a majority forms the central government, and its leader becomes the Prime Minister.
2. State Assembly Elections (Vidhan Sabha)
Held every 5 years in each state to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The majority party forms the state government led by the Chief Minister.
3. Local Body Elections
Elections for Panchayats (villages) and Municipalities (cities). They ensure self-governance at the grassroots level.
4. Presidential and Vice-Presidential
Indirect elections where elected MPs and MLAs vote to choose the President and Vice-President of India.
